Kembangan-Chai Chee Pets' Carnival 2012

Come meet us and and some of our beloved rescued dogs Gorgeous, Emma, Gabriel, and Ashley at the Kembangan-Chai Chee Pets' Carnival this Sunday. We'll be there to talk to anyone who wants to know more about our work and our dogs, and we would love to meet all our dear friends and supporters who have stood by us, believing in the work we do.

The organizers have informed us that there will be no sale of merchandise at this event, thus this event will be purely an adoption drive as well as to share our work with the public.

There is also a carnival with games and snack stalls to entertain the kids while animal welfare organizations and various government agencies involved in pet issues will be present to answer your concerns and questions about pet ownership.

Dog owners can also enter their dogs in contests such as Fastest Eater, Fastest Runner and Fancy Dress.

Date: Sunday, November 25, 2012
Time: 2pm to 4pm
Venue: Interim Park (bound by Lengkong Tujoh, Jln Selamat, Lengkong Empat and Lengkong Enam)

Come Meet Prince And Other Rescue Dogs Tomorrow

Pets' Day Out 2012 is happening tomorrow! Our darling pooches will all be there to meet you, so bring your friends and family down!

Remember our rescue dogs that touched your hearts? Sunday and Rei (now known as Sapporo)?

Bet you've been wondering what this frail skeletal dog with no fur looks like today.

Struggling to hold himself up to eat

He is no longer a pile of skin and bones... Come down and see for yourself how our little Prince looks like today :)

Come meet our little Prince
While you're there, don't miss our photo booth where you can take pictures with your pets and have them framed for only S$8.

When you take more pictures, more proceeds will be channelled towards our rescue efforts.

It takes time and effort to nurse these abandoned dogs and street canines back to good health, and we certainly wouldn't have been able to do all this without our dear volunteers and big-hearted donors.

Buy our HOPE 2013 calendars and help save more dogs!
Although we can't rescue every injured or abandoned dog out there, we want to help as many as we possibly can. This takes much time, effort and of course, money for vet bills and transportation of animals (for when we run rescue missions in the wee hours of the morning, or when they are too large to fit into our cars).

Events like Pets' Day Out 2012 help us not only gain proceeds through our merchandise sales, they also allow us to educate more people about our work and why we do what we do every single day come rain or shine, because this is the most important and challenging task for any rescue/welfare organization to accomplish.

Our doggies and volunteers are very grateful for all the love and support we've been receiving thus far, so we hope to see you TOMORROW!

Finding An Excuse To Celebrate. HOPE Is ONE!

Every day after work, we are either at the vets with rescued dogs, at the kennels, conducting house checks, home visits, feeding street dogs or catching up on admin work. Just thinking of all this is already very exhausting, so why do we keep doing it?

Volunteer, Sherry, with a 3 mth old rescued puppy named Blankie.

Fellow volunteer, Esther, who adopted Blankie.
Volunteer, Rina, with Chelsea. (Chelsea is Lisa's adopted dog.)
For our LOVE of dogs, of course! The satisfaction we enjoy from rescuing a dog, rehabilitating them and finding them a loving forever home is so immense that no amount of money can buy it. Like parents, it is our responsibility to ensure that the dogs are healthy, happy and well. We take it upon ourselves to ensure that we make the right decisions for them.

HOPE turned one in July 2012 and in this short span of a year, we have rescued and helped almost 100 dogs and 10 cats. We have rehomed many dogs to their forever homes, and this gives us a reason to celebrate! About 10 of our core volunteers got together for a potluck party and at HOPE, no party is complete without dogs! So we invited our rescued dogs Laurel, Nana, Blankie and little Oscar to join our fun. Little Oscar desperately needs a foster as he lacks confidence and social skills.

Handsome Oscar has come a long way and is now ready to be rehomed.

It was also a surprise party for fellow volunteer, Lisa.

The dogs were obviously not forgotten! They had food and treats galore!

Happy Ever After

Remember the adoption drive that was held on the 21st of October? We had ‘The Famous 5’ (puppies rescued from a breeding farm) – Murphy, Fifi, Lea, Scotty and Ally, and not forgetting ‘The Fantastic 2’ – Bingo and JJ!

We received an overwhelming response, and about a hundred people came to join us at Doggie Style Café at NEX. The cafe was so crowded and filled with dog-loving people wanting to adopt the 7 dogs.

Adoption is the way to go! Thank you for the overwhelming response.

The volunteers have been very busy conducting house checks and interviews with potential adopters over the past few weeks after the adoption drive. Thankfully, all the dogs have been rehomed!

Scotty, one of the Famous 5, is very sick and therefore, the foster has decided to keep him. Poor Scotty is suffering from liver damage, possibly from malnutrition. He is a mere 4 months old. Had we not rescued him from the breeding farm, who knows what fate lay ahead for him.

Liver problem in dogs are occurring with ever increasing frequency. Usually, when the owner finds out that his/her dog has a liver problem, it is already too late. Fortunately for Scotty, it wasn’t too late. Liver damage can be cured if it is not at the last stages where the dog only has months or days to live.
Scotty was terribly unwell

X-ray reports showed an extremely enlarged liver
It all started when Scotty started panting a lot and was constantly lethargic. He was also not behaving like a puppy should; he did not play like any other puppy would. Fiona noticed his bloated stomach and sparse fur. She brought Scotty to the vet for a check-up because she was worried that all these symptoms may be an indication of some disease. True enough, the X-ray showed that Scotty has an enlarged liver and because he is still very young and delicate, he may die. Everyone was so worried but thankfully, Scotty seems to be recovering and is getting stronger and healthier as the days go by.

A special thanks to Ivy, the owner of Doggie Style Café, for hosting this adoption drive and for supporting adoption. The adoption drive wouldn’t be such a success if not for her!

We would like to thank all our volunteers who helped with the initial rescue, conducting house checks etc and for helping out at the adoption drive. We are grateful to our fosters Lynette, Gena, Theresa, Jaswinder and Natalie for caring for the puppies. We are extremely pleased with the overwhelming response from dog lovers who all chose to adopt instead of buy.

Thanks Jaswinder for fostering JJ
We thank Jainty for attending the adoption drive and adopting JJ, a rescued street puppy.

And of course, we would like to thank everyone for taking the time off to join us at the café and a big thank you to those who adopted the dogs. We are glad that you chose to adopt! For all the people who wanted to adopt Scotty, thank you so much! But because young Scotty is very sick, we decided that the best person to adopt Scotty is his foster who has been taking good care of him and who knows him best. Continue reading our blog because we will always have more dogs for adoption! Stay tuned!

Happy World Animal Day!

Watch this video and be reminded of why we have dedicated our lives to our furry friends. The simple pleasures in life, the unassuming love and respect, the innocence and bond. Dogs are our life. Cherish and love them. That's all they ask for.

From all of us at HOPE Dog Rescue, Happy World Animal Day!

World Animal Day - Celebrating Dogs!

In case you didn't already know, it's World Animal Day on 4 October! And we at HOPE would like to dedicate this post to all the dogs out there.
Dogs have an endless optimism and unadulterated joy that we humans can only wish we had. Many a time we have seen strays with horrific injuries and scars that tell stories of immense suffering, expecting them to be tired and spiritless, only to have them bound up to us in joy despite their pain.

Mookie living happily in his factory
The loyalty of dogs is also something from which humans could learn a thing or two! Many of you may have already heard the story of Hachiko. Hachiko was a one-year-old puppy when Hidesaburo Ueno adopted him. Every day, when Ueno returned from his work as a professor at the University of Tokyo, Hachiko would come to the train station to greet him. The two of them would then travel the rest of the way home together. This daily routine went on for a year.
However, their happiness did not last long and in May 1925, Professor Ueno suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at work and died. He never returned to the train station where Hachiko was waiting. Although Ueno and Hachiko had only spent a year together, Hachiko continued to wait faithfully at the same spot at the train station each day for the next 9 years. Eventually, he grew sick from cancer and died on the streets near the train station. Even if you're not a dog person, you can't help but be moved by Hachiko's fierce loyalty and unwavering optimism and hope.
Hachiko's story is not unlike our very own Harry's. Harry was a dog that lived on the 6th floor of a factory building. His home was the space under a truck in a tiny workshop. The people there neither treated him well nor loved him, but still he thought of them as family, choosing to live at the factory for years despite not being fed nor cared for.  Finally, some months back, a new tenant moved in a few units from where Harry lived. They took pity on Harry and got him help. Now Harry has a new home where he is being cared for, for the first time in his life.

Dogs that have been hurt emotionally or physically by humans have also shown an enormous capacity for forgiveness. In a magazine published by a no-kill shelter in America, one article told the story of Roxie, a German Shepherd with a broken leg, abandoned in a box by the side of a highway. She was eventually adopted by Francis Battista, who wrote that "there is that sadness deep inside her that I will never be able to cure... she had a first family and people to whom she was devoted in the way that only a dog can be, but she was abandoned. Even though they left her to live or die by the side of a highway, Roxie still waits for them in the quiet of the evening. She could never in a million years begin to understand such betrayal, because it isn't in her." Despite the betrayal, she continued to trust our human species. Although she had developed separation anxiety and tore the house up when left alone, Roxie was learning and was clearly ecstatic to have a home once again.
All too often, we also find dogs that show clear signs of human abuse. Although they are frightened at first, it isn't long before they warm up to humans again, and display a level of trust in us that not even old friends would have for each other. It continues to baffle us that animals who have known such suffering at the hands of humans can be so quick to forgive us.
If you have a dog at home, you would definitely know how amazing dogs can be. Think how often your dogs forgive you leaving them alone for hours, days, and sometimes for weeks, with no stated reason. We don't know what they think about when we're gone, wondering where we are and when we'll return, but one thing's for sure - they are always genuinely happy to see us again, every time we return. Their capacity for hope, loyalty, forgiveness and love for their owners is something that us humans can never match.
We are truly blessed to have such amazing creatures in our lives, and if you have a doggy companion, remember to show some love to them this World Animal Day! Now go out and kiss a dog; they are born to be loved!
